Light truck, medium truck, flatbed, drop-side or box trailer: which unit suits your weight, volume and type of cargo, and what to check before booking.
Choosing the wrong vehicle is the most common cause of cost overruns in heavy freight: a truck that falls short forces a second trip, and an oversized one charges for capacity that goes unused. This guide explains the types of units used in road transport in Venezuela and how to decide which one suits each load.
The most common units
Light truck (camión 350). Roughly 3.5 tonnes of capacity. The classic delivery unit: partial loads, urban deliveries and shipments that do not justify a large truck. It can enter areas with size restrictions.
Medium truck (camión 750). Around 7 tonnes. The middle ground for commercial goods, materials and medium equipment between cities. Usually the most efficient option when the load exceeds a light truck but does not fill a trailer.
Flatbed trailer. A tractor unit with an open trailer for machinery, steel structures, pipes and loads lifted by crane. It can be loaded from the sides and from above.
Drop-side trailer (batea). A trailer with side walls, designed for bulk or palletised materials that need lateral containment: blocks, sacks, coils, loads that must not shift in transit.
Box trailer (furgón). An enclosed trailer for goods that must travel protected from weather and sight: finished products, appliances, non-perishable food, high-value cargo.
How to decide: five questions
- How much does it weigh? Total weight sets the minimum tonnage of the unit. Add the weight of pallets or packaging, not just the product.
- How much space does it take? A light but bulky load can fill a box trailer without getting near the weight limit. Measure length, width and height of every package.
- How is it loaded and unloaded? If there are forklifts at both ends, any unit works. If a crane is needed, the flatbed is the option. If it is loaded by hand, a low, accessible unit is better.
- Does it need protection? Goods sensitive to rain, dust or theft travel in a box trailer. Cargo that does not deteriorate can go on a flatbed or drop-side, with straps and covers.
- Where does the route go? Bridges with weight limits, narrow streets or urban areas with traffic restrictions may require a smaller unit for the last stretch.
What to check before booking
- That the carrier states the type of unit and its capacity in the quote, not just the price.
- That the load is secured with straps, chocks or covers according to the type of goods.
- That the vehicle has valid insurance and paperwork and the driver has experience on the route.
- That there is tracking during the trip and a contact person who answers.
