Night closures on the Caracas–La Guaira highway and works on the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho: what we know and how to schedule your freight dispatches.
The past few weeks brought few new items for anyone moving goods in Venezuela, but two affect the road directly: the Ministry of Transport announced night closures on the Caracas–La Guaira highway, and work continues on the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho highway in Anzoátegui. Here we cover only what can be checked in published sources, and what to do about your freight transport dispatches.
Caracas–La Guaira highway: controlled closures for pothole repair
On October 30, the Ministry of Transport announced controlled closures on the Caracas–La Guaira highway for pothole repair and road rehabilitation. The measure covers kilometer 0 to kilometer 16, in both directions, and the closure ran from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. that night, that is, until early Saturday, October 31.
The reports do not say how long the work will continue or whether the schedule will repeat every night. They do not name alternate routes or mention heavy cargo specifically. The ministry asked users to "take the appropriate precautions". Given that, the prudent assumption is that restrictions in that time window may happen again, so confirm the state of the road before each departure.
This road links Caracas with the port of La Guaira. To see how that port is doing, read Puerto Cabello and La Guaira: news for your freight.
Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho highway: works on the Píritu–Pachaquito section
Further east, an October 10 report says construction continues on the Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho highway in the Píritu–Pachaquito section, in Anzoátegui state. The work is carried out by the Sector Vice Presidency for Public Works and Services, under the Plan Venezuela Renace.
According to the report, 34,817 tonnes of hot asphalt have been laid, with 300 tonnes applied recently, and crews are working on embankments, slope stabilization and road shoulders. The report gives no completion date and says nothing about benefits for freight, so don't assume it is finished or count on it to save time. It is a useful reference if you dispatch to the east, for example to Puerto La Cruz.
What still applies to heavy freight
Two items from earlier in the month remain relevant for planning:
- INTT holiday restrictions. From October 11 to 13, vehicles of 3,500 kg or more were banned from the road, with exemptions for food, drinking water, medicine and emergency vehicles. The pattern repeats on every long holiday. We explain it in holidays and heavy trucks: how to plan your shipments.
- Industry complaints. On October 5, Consetransporte asked carriers to channel their complaints through its official digital platform, so formal proposals can be presented to the Ministry of Transport. Demands include service stations with basic facilities, automated toll collection and a fairer rate scheme. More context in what October 2026 brought for freight transport.
What it means for your shipment
When an important road has night closures, the effect does not stop at the closing hour: trucks pile up before and after, and delivery times shift. In practice:
- Confirm before you leave. Ask your carrier whether the route has closures or works that day, especially if your destination or port of origin is La Guaira.
- Avoid tight night-time windows. If a delivery depends on arriving in that area in the early hours, add margin or reschedule.
- Ask for dates, not promises. A useful quote states estimated departure and delivery, and explains what happens if a road is closed.
- Keep documents ready. With the goods in order, a delay on the road does not add to problems at checkpoints. Review which documents must travel with your cargo.
- Pack well. If the truck sits for hours, packing matters. Here is how to pack and label your cargo.
On routes such as Valencia – Caracas and Valencia – Puerto Cabello, always ask about road conditions on the day of dispatch.
